Maps were created using generalized information about species distribution from published sources. Map is on the regional level.

Mapping procedure:

The distribution area map was created using published data (Atlas, 1960; State list, 1994, 2004 etc.) and the arable territory map of the USSR (Koroljeva et al, 2003). Species is cultivated in the USSR as far north as 55° of northern latitude (Zhuleva, Cherenok, 2002); intensive cultivation takes place in Transcaucasica, Middle Asia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belorussia, the Northern Caucasus, and the Lower Volga region (Gazenbush, 1958; Vehov, 1978). Small areas of cultivation include the Khabarovsk region (Makarov, 1990), Moscow, Nizhnij Novgorod, the Leningrad oblast (Gran'ko, Komarova, 1975; Khrenova, 1981), Southern Ural (Skvirsky, 1958), Western Siberia (Tomato, 1986), the Perm' oblast (Mezentseva, Belousova, 1980; Pepper, 1992), and central regions of Russia (Vehov, 1978; Zhuleva, Cherenok, 2002), which are shown by points.
