Date of creation:

22.03.2004.

Scale:

1:20 000 000.

Accuracy of map:

It is created on materials of maps of natural scale 1: 33 000 000 and 40 000 000.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. It consists of four layers characterizing disease distribution and disease severity on potato.

Accuracy of the classifier:

The whole potato growing area in the territory of the former USSR was included in the disease area as the Potato Late Blight is distributed everywhere in this zone. Zones of the disease severity were allocated in the limits of the area by the results of open publications analysis (Popkova, 1972; Chumakov, Zakharova, 1990; Zakharenko, 2003). To 20% of affected potato tops are attacked in the low disease severity zone; from 20 to 50% of affected potato tops in the moderate severity zone, and more than 50% of affected tops in the high severity zone.

Procedure of map drawing:

The Northern border of the disease distribution is substantially taken according to map of A.B. Filippov (2002). The whole territory of the former USSR south of this border has been included in the area. Two isolated foci located out of the main area, in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic and in Magadan Region, are also included. By the result of literature analysis the three zones of the disease severity have been drawn on a blank map with the borders of administrative territories and the zone characterizing regions of industrial potato growing. The South of the former USSR (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan) is a zone of Potato Late Blight low development and low severity. Central and Black Earth areas of Russia and the North Caucasus are the zone of moderate disease severity. High disease severity is occurred in the North West of Russia, the Ural, Siberia, and especially in the Far East (Popkova, 1972; Chumakov, Zakharova, 1990; Zakharenko, 2003). The blank maps were scanned. Registration and vectoring of its raster copies have been performed by standard tools of current GIS-technologies.
