Accuracy of map:

Map was created based on information taken from open published literature and maps of scale 1: 33,000,000.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR" 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons. Zones of recorded mass outbreak are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

Within the limits of the general area in the territory of the former USSR only a zone of low damage was allocated. Here the pest has economic significance with the following economic thresholds: 5-8% damaged buds or 3 caterpillars per running meter before flowering of fruit cultures (in a phase of green tops); 15 caterpillars per 100 rosettes during red bed phase (Dolzhenko, 2004). According to the following sources, A. variegana occasionally causes considerable damage to generative organs in some orchards: Kostyuk (1980), Kuznetsov (1994); but generally the pest is counted together with all orchard pests. Treatments against bud pests and Codling Moth also reduce the A. variegana population density.

Method of map production:

Distribution area in the former USSR outlined according to the following reference data on the species: Romanova (1949), Minder (1959), Galetenko (1960), Fal.kovich (1962), Kostyuk (1974, 1980), Vasil.ev & Livshits (1984), Kuznetsov (1994, 2001) and others listed below. In the European part of Russia it passes from the border of Finland and Karelia (Kullberg et al., 2001) through Arkhangel.sk Region - Komi Republic - Kirov Region - Udmurtia - Tatarstan according to the following sources: Sedykh (1974), Kostyuk (1980). In Middle Asia the species is known from Tajikistan (Sherniyazova, 1974) and Turkmenistan according to Krasil.nikova (1967) and Dubatolov (2000). High mountains of the Caucasus and desert lands of the Caspian Depression excluded from the area. Almaty Region of Kazakhstan included in the area based on research by Danilevskii & Kuznetsov (1962) and Kuznetsov (2001). Southern West Siberia included based on the following sources: Kostyuk (1974, 1980), Babenko (1982), Kuznetsov (1994, 2001). There is a single record from Ulan-Ude (Kostyuk, 1980). The species is absent in the Far East. The zone of low damage includes the steppe zone of Ukraine, as well as Transcarpathia. It was adjusted along the borders of steppe zone (Barysheva et al., 1992) and along areas of industrial cultivation of fruit crops (Tochenov, 1984) and apple trees (Terekhina, 2005).
