Scale:

1:20,000,000.

Accuracy of map:

Map was created based on a map to the scale of 1:33,000,000.

Projection:

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons. Zones of pest damage are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

The insect area was divided into zones of high and low damage severity according to the following sources: Matov (1972), Mordvilko (1936), Reznik (1970), Palii (1960) and others. The zone of high damage includes regions that are characterized by periodic mass reproduction of the pest according to points 5-9 (70 to 100% of plants are populated by the pest). The zone of low damage is characterized according to points 1-3 (up to 70% of the plants in the field are populated).

Method of map production:

Scientists were given maps with boundaries of Oblasts and arable lands. After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand-drawn on maps. If data were on the Oblast-level, distribution is on the Oblast level. In some cases, Oblasts are further refined using boundaries of the Arable Land Map (Koroljeva et al., 2003). Hand-drawn maps were scanned, georeferenced and vectorized. The materials of VIZR expeditions were used in addition to published materials in order to determine the insect distribution area. The borders of the zones of different degrees of harmfulness were determined according to the following sources: Mordvilko (1936), Palii (1960), Reznik (1970), Matov (1972), Vasil'ev (1973) and Pavlyushin (2001). The northern border was determined according to Shaposhnikov (1964) and Ivanovskaya (1977), as well as the data of expeditions and the data taken from sucking traps. The results of the analysis of host spreading were used according to the atlas of the USSR vegetation (sugar and vegetable beet, beans, haricot beans, potatoes, sunflower, tomato, and others), taking into account the temperature preference of this insect (it is a cold-resistant species). The vector map of the distribution of sugar beet within the territory of the Former Soviet Union and the map of arable lands have also been used for the correction of damage zones (Koroleva et al., 2003).
