Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR" 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons. Zones of recorded mass outbreak are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

The area of this species represented within the area of industrial cultivation of fruits in the territory of the former USSR. Within the limits of the general area only a zone of low damage was allocated. Here the pest has economic significance with the following economic thresholds: 3-5 egg-batches per tree before buds blossom; 0.5-3 caterpillars per running meter of branch or 10-15% damaged leaves before blossoming of fruits and berries (Dolzhenko, 2004).

Method of map production:

After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand drawn on maps. If data were on the Oblast-level, distribution is on the Oblast level. In some cases, Oblasts are further refined by boundaries of the Arable Land Map (Koroljeva et al., 2003). Hand drawn maps were scanned, geo-referenced and vectorized. The northern and eastern borders of the A. crataegana area were outlined along the smoothed line of .Saint-Petersburg - south of Arkhangel.sk Region - Kirov - Middle Ural - Orenburg - Ural.sk - Lower Volga Basin. according to the following reference data on species distribution: Kuznetsov & Martynova (1954), Markelova (1957, 1959), Chekhonadskikh (1970), Kostyuk (1974, 1980), Charushina & Shernin (1974), Kutenkova (1986), Kuznetsov (1994), Yakovlev & Yakovlev (2004). Original records east of the Urals were not found. Records from the Omsk (Shvetsova, 1950) and Almaty (Sagitov & Ismukhambetov, 2004) regions require confirmation. High mountains of the Caucasus and desert lands of the Caspian Depression are excluded from the area. The zone of low damage coincides with areas of industrial cultivation of fruit crops according to the following sources: Markelova (1957, 1959), Minder (1959), Kostyuk (1974, 1980), Vasil.ev & Livshits (1984), Kuznetsov (1994), Tochenov (1984).
