Authors:

Specialist-biologist M.N. Berim,
GIS-specialist M.I. Saulich.

Date of creation:

4.12.2007.

Scale:

1:20 000 000.

Accuracy of map:

It is created on materials of map of natural scale 1:33 000 000.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map is composed of 3 thematic layers. Zones of distribution and damage are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of the classifier:

The insect area is divided into zones of high and low damage using the published materials. The zone of low damage includes regions that are characterized by periodical increase of number of larvae in ground (at a depth to 10 cm) to 80 per square meter during early spring period, while the zone of high damage includes regions that are characterized by periodical increase of number of larvae above 80 per square meter (Shuster, Krisachenko, 1980).

Method of map production:

The northern border has been also marked after the published materials (Mamaev, 1964; Vasil'ev, 1973). The northern part of area is located in Baltic States. The species is marked in Siberia, Ural, Amur Basin Region. The borders of zones of different harmfulness are given, using criteria that have been published by T.P.Kolomoets & N.S.Turaev (1977), M.B.Ruban et al (1987), etc. Low harming activity is reported in steppe zone of Ukraine and Russia (European part), in southern part of Siberia, Transcaucasia, Middle Asia and Kazakhstan. Highest harming activity is marked in forest, forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, forest-steppe zone of Russia (European part, Middle Ural), and in Moldova. The vector map of distribution of alfalfa within the territory of the Former USSR has been also used for the correction of damage zones (Koroleva et al., 2003). The map has been scanned; its registration and vectorization have been made by GIS-technology means.
