Accuracy of classifier:

Within the limits of the insect geographic range regions of high and low damage were selected. In the region of high damage crop losses of wheat often exceed 5%. In this region the wheat thrip numbers exceed economic threshold values on a regular basis amounting to 600 individuals per 20 net sweeps, or 8-10 adults per one stem (during booting), or 40-50 larvae per one ear (during grain filling) (Anonymous, 1984). The regions where losses of wheat crop exceed 5% in some years only are combined into the zone of low damage. Low damage by wheat thrips in these regions is determined by two factors. In some regions (Nizhnii Novgorod, Lipetsk, Belgorod Regions, etc.) insect numbers reach economic threshold values only in some years. In other regions (the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, etc.), where the pest numbers often exceed the threshold, insect feeding is restricted to winter wheat almost solely; it is known that winter wheat is 2-4 times less vulnerable comparatively to summer wheat.

Method of map production:

Scientists were given maps with boundaries of Oblasts and arable lands. After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand drawn on maps. Hand drawn maps were scanned, georeferenced and vectorized. Map of the geographic range was compiled based on the following publications: Arnol'di et al. (1949), Dyadechko (1964), Zhichkina & Kaplin (2001), Kryzhanovskii & Dantsig (1972), Tanskii (1959, 1961a, 1961b, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1969), and Shurovenkov (1971). Records in ecological literature on the wheat thrips presence in the Far East seem to be erroneous (Meshcheryakov, 1985). In the former USSR the species geographic range is limited in the north by territories of Baltic States, Moscow Region and Middle Ural. In the east the species is recorded in Buryatiya inclusively. In the south the wheat thrip is recorded in Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Uzbekistan (Bukhara, Andijon and Toshkent Regions), and in the Caucasus. When the map was drawn, we kept in mind the data on the wheat thrip presence in Iran. The borders of the damage zones were determined according to the following data: Tanskii (1959, 1961a, 1961b, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1969), Grivanov (1958), Sitchenko (1972), and also according to official reviews of pest distribution and development (see the list of literature cited below). The zone of high damage covers the Volga Region, Kazakhstan, adjacent districts of Ural and Siberia (Tyumen and Kurgan Regions, the south of Novosibirsk and Omsk Regions), southeast Ukraine (Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk Regions), partly North Caucasus (Rostov Region). The zone of low damage covers adjacent terrains of Ukraine (Odessa, Mykolayiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Kirovograd, and Cherkasy Regions), European (Belgorod, Kursk Regions, Krasnodar Territory, the south of Rostov Region and Stavropol Territory) and Asian (the center of Novosibirsk Region, Altai Territory) parts of Russia, Kirghizia, the south of Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
