Accuracy of the classifier:

The insect area is divided into zones of high and low damage using the published materials. The zone of low damage includes regions that are characterized by periodical number of mealy plum aphid on stone fruit trees according to points 1-2; the zone of high damage is characterized by insect number according to points 3 and above (Drakhovskaya, 1962).

Method of map production:

The area and damage zones of Hyaloptera pruni Geoffr. have been marked on a blank map by results of the analysis of the published materials. The northern border has been marked after the published materials (Shaposhnikov, 1964; Vasil'ev, 1973; Ivanovskaya, 1976). The northern border of area follows the northern border of plum trees growing zone. The species is marked in West Siberia (Ivanovskaya, 1976). This aphid occurs also in Primorskii territory (Ivanovskaya, Kupyanskaya, 1979). The borders of zones of different harmfulness are given, using criteria that have been published by V.P.Nevskii (1929); L.M.Gusynina (1958); Yu.V. Khizhnyak (1965); N.N.Kharchenko (1967); M.F.Fursova (1970); I.I.Vanin& M.F.Garnago (1971); M.Ya.Fol'kina (1973); B.V.Vereshchagin & A.V.Andreev (1981) and others. Low harmful activity is reported in Central Black Earth zone of European part of Russia, Middle Volga Basin region, forest and forest-steppe regions of Ukraine, also in southern part of Byelorussia (Gusynina, 1958; Khizhnyak, 1965; Kharchenko, 1967; Vanin, Garnago, 1971). Northern border of low harming activity zone follows southern border of Moscow, Vladimir, Gor'kii regions, also Tatarstan. Highest harming activity is marked in steppe zone of Ukraine, Lower Volga Basin region, in Moldova, Middle Asia, Kazakhstan (mainly in southern regions), North Caucasus, Transcaucasia. The vector map of distribution of plum trees within the territory of the Former USSR have been also used for the correction of damage zones (Koroleva et al., 2003). The map has been scanned; its registration and vectorization have been made by GIS-technology means.
