Date of creation:

25.08.2004.

Scale:

1:20,000,000.

Accuracy of map:

Map was created using information from state publications and maps of scale 1:33,000,000-1:50,000,000.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic content:

Vector map consisting of 3 layers. Distribution area and zones of damage are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

Within the limits of the pest distribution area within the former USSR, 2 zones were allocated -- zones of moderate and low damage. In the zone of moderate damage, the number of M. neustrium usually exceeds the economic threshold for egg laying and caterpillar hatching under favorable weather conditions. The economic threshold is 1-5 egg batches per tree before buds blossom and 10-15% damaged leaves after buds blossom, corresponding to 12-15 caterpillars per 100 branches (Dolzhenko, 2004). In the zone of low harm, the number occasionally (1-2 times per decade) reaches this economic threshold.

Mapping procedure:

The map was compiled following an analysis of state publications and maps. A map by Romanova and Lozinskii (1968) was used as a prototype. The northern border of the pest distribution area in the southern Ural region was corrected according to Bashmakov (1958) and Dubatolov & Zolotuhin (2000); the Omsk Region is included in the distribution area according to Prokof.ev (1987); in the Far East (Amur and Sakhalin Regions, Khabarovsk and Primorskii Territories, and S. Kurils [Kunashir]), the distribution area coincides with the border of deciduous, mixed, and inundated forests (Barysheva et al., 1992) according to Chistyakov (1988, 1992, 1999). Records of the species from southern and eastern Kazakhstan, from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were discovered to refer to other species of the genus Malacosoma (M. parallelum Staudinger, M. castrense (Linnaeus), M. prima Staudinger) according to Dubatolov & Zolotuhin (2000) and Chistyakov (1999). There is a single record of the nominotypical subspecies in Irkutsk (Dubatolov & Zolotuhin, 2000). The zone of moderate damage within the areas of industrial cultivation of fruits (Tochenov et al., 1984) was determined using published data (Nekrutenko, 1974; Polyakov et al., 1984; Kuznetsov, 1999). The zone of low damage (from the Baltic and Byelorussia to Bashkiria and the Omsk Region) coincides with areas of industrial fruit cultivation that were not included in the zone of moderate damage (see sources of data).
