Accuracy of map:

Map was created based on information taken from published literature.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons. Zones of recorded mass outbreak are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

Zones of habitation of S. pilleriana in the territory of the former USSR were selected according to information published in the following literature: Kostyuk (1980), Pykhova (1970), Medvedev (1978), Kuznetsov (1994), Ler (2001). Ranges of damage were identified according to the following publications: Dzhashi & Tamaishvili (1949), Pykhova (1970), Vasil.ev (1974), Belyaev (1988), Kuznetsov (1994). Within the region of damage was included Moldova, as well as Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Donetsk Regions and Crimea Republic of Ukraine (damage is primarily to grapes), where larva density in vineyards during pest outbreaks can reach 5 to 15 specimens per plant, and crop losses reach 30-40% or more (Pykhova, 1970), and also West Georgia, Azerbaijan (on tea, citrus, grape, persimmon, walnut, fig, etc.), Primorskii Territory and Amur Region (on apple, raspberry, strawberry, cherry, Schizandra, grape, soy-bean, clover, etc. according to Vasil.ev (1974) and Kuznetsov (1994). A quantitative scale of damage for this species has not yet been precisely detected.

Method of map production:

Scientists were given maps with boundaries of Oblasts and arable lands. After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand drawn on maps. If data were on the Oblast-level, distribution is on the Oblast level. In some cases, Oblast.s are further refined by boundaries of the Arable Land Map (Koroljeva et al., 2003). Hand drawn maps were scanned, georeferenced and vectorized. The boreal border of S. pilleriana was placed along the austral limit of mixed forest in the European part, along the boreal limit of forest-steppe in West Siberia, along the austral limit of taiga in East Siberia and Primorskii Territory, including most parts of Sakhalin, south Kamchatka and South Kuril Islands, according to the following published data on the geographic distribution of the insect: Barysheva et al. (1992), Kuznetsov (1994). The austral border of pest distribution in West Europe was established based on collections and references (Pyrenees, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria; further austral border goes eastward through Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Mongolia, China, and Korea (Kostyuk, 1980). In the former USSR the austral border of its geographic range was determined much less definitely; it passes through States of Transcaucasia and Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kirghizia). Presence of S. pilleriana south of Siberia was confirmed by limited findings from Altai, Kemerovo Region, and the south of Krasnoyarsk Region. According to available data, the austral border of pest geographic range was carried out along the austral limit of steppe in the European part and in Kazakhstan; mountain ranges and oases of Central Asia were also included in its geographic range. Zone of distribution of S. pilleriana was specified using the map of soil-vegetation zones (Barysheva et al., 1992), and that of the zone of damage was specified by use of the map of agricultural lands of the former USSR (Koroljeva et al., 2003).
