Date of creation:

27.06.2005

Scale:

1:20 000 000

Accuracy of map:

Map was created based on information taken from open-published literature and maps of scale 1: 17 000 000 and 1:33 000 000

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons. Zones of recorded mass outbreak are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

Only a zone of low damage was allocated within the limits of the general area in the territory of the former USSR. Here the pest populates old trees causing various kinds of damage to bark of trunks and skeletal branches. Insecticide treatments of fruit trees in summer against a complex of lepidopteran pests also reduce pest numbers (Zhemchuzhina & Stenina, 2001).

Method of map production:

Scientists were given maps with boundaries of Oblasts and arable lands. After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand drawn on maps. If data were on the Oblast-level, distribution is on the Oblast level. In some cases, Oblast.s are further refined by boundaries of the Arable Land Map (Koroljeva et al., 2003). Hand drawn maps were scanned, georeferenced and vectorized. The Apple Clearwing area was outlined according to the following reference data on the species distribution: Talitskii (1952, 1953), Gromovaya (1964), Batiashvili (1965), Baryakin (1967, 1971), Zagaikevich (1974), Rafal.skii (1975), Savkovskii (1976), Vasil.ev & Livshits (1984), Polyakov et al. (1984), Sukhareva (1994). The northern border of the species area was drawn along the northern border of forest-steppes according to Chikov (1983) and Vasil.ev & Livshits (1984). The species also inhabits Transcaucasia according to the following sources: Kobakhidze (1957), Batiashvili (1965), Baryakin (1967, 1971). The species is not found East of the Volga River. The Apple Clearwing record from the Far East (Shtundyuk & Ablakanova, 1969) probably belongs to another species. High mountains of the Caucasus and desert lands of the Caspian Depression were excluded from the area. The zone of low damage of the pest includes all the zones of fruit growing (Tochenov, 1984) within the species area according to the following sources: Talitskii (1952, 1953), Krylova (1961), Skiba (1973), Rafal.skii (1975), Gromova (1964), Kobakhidze (1957), Batiashvili (1965), Baryakin (1967, 1971).
