Accuracy of classifier:

Data from open publications were used to establish species distribution and zones of pest damage. A map of species distribution was based on an analysis of the biological collections at the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Science. Boundaries of the zone of harmfulness were determined according to the following publications: (Stoichev, 1973); (Shelud'ko, 1978); (Kopaneva, 1980). The zone of moderate harm comprises major area of Tanymecus dilaticollis Gyll. in the former USSR. Within the area of distribution, a moderate zone of pest damage has been established according to the extent that agricultural plants are damaged. Zone of moderate damage is defined as the spring occurrence of 5 adults per square meter on maize and sunflower crops, injuring 25-50% of sprouts.

Method of map production:

Scientists were given maps with boundaries of Oblasts and arable lands. After reviewing historic literature, species distribution was hand drawn on maps. If data were on the Oblast-level, distribution is on the Oblast level. In some cases, Oblast.s are further refined by boundaries of the Arable Land Map. Hand drawn maps were scanned, georeferenced and vectorized. The localities of the species were marked in coordinate system on a blank geographical map (Bobrinskii et al., 1969) using standard GIS-technologies.
