Taxonomic position.

Family Poaceae Benth. genus Agropyron Gaertn.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial grass, forming long creeping rhizomes. Stems 30.90 cm tall, glavrous throughout. Radical leaves few or none, cauline ones 2-3, declined from the stem, convolute, les often flat, glabrous and smooth beneath, on inner (upper) surface shortly and densely velvety pubescent, usually without long patent hairs. Spikes 2-10 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide, broadly or oblong-linear, with densely and pectinately arranged spikelets or with overlapping and slightly pectinate ones. Glumes ciliate at keel, awned. Lemmas more or less long hairy or with short prickles at back, at apex with an awn up to 2 mm long. Flowers in May - June. Anemophilous. 2n=28.

Distribution.

East Siberia (south); Mongolia.

Ecology.

On mobile or loose sands and in sandy, poorly sodded steppes, on sand barchans and dunes.

Use and economic value.

Forage grass.
