Taxonomic position.

Family Poaceae Benth. genus Agrostis L.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial grass. Culms 40-90 cm tall. Leaves 3-9 cm long, 1-3.5 mm wide. Panicle 10-18 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, erect, with scabrous branches and rachis. Spikelets 1.75 - 2.25 mm long, violet, less often light green; lemma 1.25-1.75 mm long, with geniculate awn, less often awnless. Palea rudimentary. Flowers in June - July. Anemophilous. 2n=14, 28, 35, 42, 56.

Distribution.

Forest and forest-steppe zones of the European part of the former USSR; Europe, eastern North America; alien or introduced in many non-tropical countries of both Hemispheres.

Ecology.

Damp forest areas, damp and swampy meadows, low sedge fens.

Use and economic value.

Forage and lawn grass.
