Taxonomic position.

Family Alliaceae J.Agardh, genus Allium L.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial bulbous geophyte. Bulbs, 1-2 in number, are cylindrical-conical, 1.5-2.0 cm in diameter, with blackish filmy coats. Stalk is 30-70 cm high, straight and thick, with two winged ribs in the top section. Leaves are broad linear, flat, 7-15 mm wide. Umbel is spherical, polyanthous, dense. Tepals are 5-6 mm long, glossy, pink. Stamens are 1.5-2.0 times longer than the tepals. Autochore. 2n=32.

Distribution.

West (Altai) and Middle Siberia, Southern Urals, Kazakhstan (Kazakh hill country, western spurs of Altai).

Ecology.

Mesophyte and petrophyte. Steppe, meadow-like and stony slopes, steppe-prone pineries.

Utilization and economic value.

Used as a table (vegetable) plant and a source of vitamins. This species contains cultivated forms (cultivars). Contains much ascorbic acid. Resistant to false mildew of onion.
