Taxonomic position.

Family: Alliaceae J.Agardh, genus: Allium L.

Synonyms.

A. baicalense Willd.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial herbaceous bulbous plant. Bulbs, single or in pairs, are set on a horizontal rhizome. Cylindrical ovoids, they are sheathed in blackish solid filmy outer coats. Stalk is 30-60 cm high. Leaves are 5-10 (12) mm wide, flat, linear, slightly curved, clustered at the base. Umbel is hemispherical or spherical, polyanthous, dense. Tepals are pink, ovate-elliptic. Filaments are 1.5 times longer than the perianth, solid, subulate. Style noticeably protrudes from the perianth. 2n=32, 40, 48.

Distribution.

Siberia (Eastern Sayan Mountains, Baikal Lake shoreline, Trans-Baikal region), western part of Amur Province, Manchuria, Eastern Mongolia.

Ecology.

Petrophyte. Stony and rubbly steppe slopes.

Utilization and economic value.

Used as a table (vegetable) plant and a source of vitamins. Closely related to the domesticated sp. A. nutans.
