Taxonomical position.

Family Poaceae Benth., Genera Avena L..

Morphology and biology.

Annual cereal. Stalks smooth, 60-100 cm tall. Leaves and vaginas bare. Panicle more or less sprawling or nearly unilateral, 8-20 cm in length. Spikelet with two florets, 25 mm in length. Spikelet scales 15-25 mm in length. The bottom floral scales have a strongly bent awn on back. Blossoms in June-August. Anemophilous. 2n=14 (28).

Distribution.

The European region of the former USSR, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean.

Ecology.

Occurs in crops of cultural oats, on roadsides, and in settlements.

Use and economic value.

Weed in crops of cultured oats and other cultures.
