Taxonomical position.

Family Poaceae Benth. Genera Beckmannia Host.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial cereal. The plant forms dense tussocks without creeping rhizomes. Stalks smooth, erect, without nodule thickenings in the bottom internodes, 50-90 cm tall. Leaves flat, bare, rough, 3-8 mm wide; ligulas 2.5-4.5 mm long. Inflorescence is a complex spike, 10-25 cm long, with strongly appressed, upwardly directed branchlets. Spikelets 2.5-3 mm long, split from the sides. Spikelet scales bare and somewhat flat. The bottom floral scales in the top part have small neb. Blossoming occurs in June-August. Anemophilous. Chromosome number: 2n=14.

Distribution.

The Northern European region of the former USSR, Siberia, and the Far East.

Ecology.

Occurs in crude and marshy meadows and in coastal shallows.

Use and economic value.

Fodder plant.
