Perennial cespitose plant. Leaves flat, rather wide, scabrous, with (very rarely without) long patent hairs above. Spikes straight or slightly bent, dense, more or less elongate, green or sometimes violet-colored. Glumes slightly shorter than adjacent lemma, with 4-5 thick pale scabrous veins, broadly lanceolate, gradually narrowed into short cusp or awn, sometimes with a tooth near apex, with scarious margin, more or less hairy inside. Lemma scabrous or shortly hairy, gradually narrowed into short cusp or awn up to 5-6 mm long. Palea keel with dense short spinules or ciliate. Cross-pollinated anemophilous plant. Flowers in June, fruits in August. 2n=28.Distribution.

In light-coniferous and deciduous, mainly forb forests, in forest meadows, fringes; with valley meadows and streamside shingles reaches high mountains, where it occurs in forest and subalpine meadows, near stone fields. In Arctic zone, tends to nival grass sites, stony and shingly riversides, riverine meadows.Use and economic value.
