Taxonomic position.

Family Poaceae Benth. Genera Elymus L.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial grass. Forms dense tussocks. Stalks numerous, well leafed, 40-65 cm high, Leaf width 2-4 mm, almost flat or curtailed, naked, from above rough, from below almost smooth. Spike length 6-20 cm, narrow, bilateral, rather rare, direct or poorly inclined, sometimes glaucescent-green. Spikelets 10-12 (16) mm in length, joints of axes of spikelet with very short spinules. Spikelet scales 8-11.5 mm with 4-7 veins, sometimes glaucescent, gradually pointed. Bottom floral scales of length of 8.5-13 mm, awnless, naked and smooth, except top part of veins has few spinules. Blossoms in July. Anemophilous. 2n=28.

Distribution.

North America. In territory of the former USSR has naturalized in European and Far East areas.

Ecology.

On waste grounds and on roadsides.

Utilization and economic value.

Fodder plant. Close species Elymus novae-angliae (Scribn.) Tzvel. entered into culture.
