Hedysarum neglectum Ledeb. - Neglected Sweetvetch.

Taxonomic position.

Family Fabaceae Lindl., genus Hedysarum L.

Synonyms.

H. lasiocarpum Ldb., H. obscurum var. neglectum Kryl.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial herbaceous plant. Root thickened, growing deep in soil. Stems 25-80 cm tall, erect, glabrous or adpressedly pubescent, arising upwards from root collar. Leaflets 4-10 pairs, oblong or elliptic, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 1 cm wide, on both surfaces adpressedly pubescent. Peduncles terminal. Raceme lax, 15-30-flowered. Calyx 4-6 mm long, pubescent. Corolla lilac, purple-lilac, 13-19 mm long. Ovary and pods pubescent, sometimes along both or one suture. Pod segments 2-5, suborbicular, rarely oblong, bordered at margin. Flowers and fruits in June - July. Cross-pollinated entomophilous plant. 2n=14.

Distribution.

Southern Siberia, East Kazakhstan, mountains of Tien Shan, Pamir-Alai.

Ecology.

In high montane zone, goes down to forest zone; in subalpine, alpine, forest meadows, on stony slopes, in thinned larch forests.

Use and economic value.

Good forage plant, may be used for grazing and silage. Also useful for fixing slopes.
