Scale:

1:20 000 000.

Accuracy of the map:

The map is based on data of 1:17 000 000 - 1:25 000 000 scale maps.

Projection:

"Albers Equal-Area Conic Projection for USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0

Basic contents:

The map is a vector file consisting of polygons and dots. The localities of the species are represented by dots, the area of possible species distribution is represented by the polygons.

Accuracy of the qualifier:

The dots represent information on the species localities according to published sources and herbarium specimens. The polygons are based on generalized information from published sources and herbarium specimens.

Method of the map contruction:

The data on the species distribution were obtained from the database of the species localities coordinates included in the Information Retrieval System "Crop Wild Relatives in Russia" (STC Informregistr 0229905883, 1999), from published maps by E.V.Baranova in "Atlas of medicinal plant ranges and resources..." (Tolmachev, 1983) and E.M.Antipova in "Flora of Siberia" (Krasnoborov, 1997), and from published lists of the species localities and areas of occurrence (Kinzikaeva, 1988; Pavlov, 1965; Mayevsky, 2006). The species has a disjunctive range. The borders of the Crimean and Caucasian parts of the range, as well as the eastern, southern and western borders of the European part of the range, are drawn after Baranova (Tolmachev, 1983). We have changed the northern and northwestern borders of the European part of the range on the basis of data on the species occurrence in "Flora of Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic" (Tomin, 1959), "Manual of the plants of Meschera" (Tikhomirov, 1987), "Manual of the plants of the Southwestern Russian Nechernozemie" (Bulokhov, Velichkin, 1998), works by Tzvelev (2000), Notov (2005). The authors of these publications notice that the distribution of elecampane in the Baltic states, Belorussia, Northwestern European Russia, and in some regions of the Russian Nechernozemie zone is related to its former cultivation as a medicinal and ornamental plant. Hence, all the species localities in these areas are represented by dots rather than included in the polygon. The borders of the Central Asian parts of the range are drawn mainly after Baranova (Tolmachev, 1983), and specified after Kinzikaeva (1988). The borders of the West Siberian part are drawn after Baranova (Tolmachev, 1983) and corrected after Antipova (Krasnoborov, 1997) and according to herbarium materials referred to in the database of the Information Retrieval System.
