Date of creation:

22.03.2005.

Scale:

1:20,000,000.

Accuracy of map:

Map was created using herbarium specimens and maps of scale 1:20,000,000-1:50,000,000.

The projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for Russia", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Map is a vector file consisting of polygons and points. Locations of species are represented by points, while areas of possible distribution of the species are represented by polygons.

Accuracy of qualifier:

Points represent species locations referenced in published sources and from which herbarium specimens were taken. Polygons are based on generalized information from published sources and herbarium specimens.

Method of map construction:

The data on species distribution were obtained from a database of species locations, the Information Retrieval System, "Wild-growing relatives of cultural plants of Russia" (NTC "Informregistr" #0229905883), and published maps in Sokolov et al (1980), Kharkevich (1996), and Koropachinskiy & Vstovskaya (2002).
The western and northern borders of the continental part of the distribution area were mapped using Kharkevich (1996) and corrected using herbarium materials from the Information Retrieval System, "Wild-growing relatives of cultural plants of Russia" (1999). The northern border of the distribution area in Sakhalin was constructed in accordance with Sokolov et al (1980) and herbarium materials. Most western and northwestern points beyond the border of the polygon were not used to map the general distribution area. The herbarium materials used require supplementary investigations, however, as they may be transitional forms between Malus baccata and M. mandshurica.
