Taxonomic position.

Biology and morphology.

Hairless annual herb, 10 to 40 cm tall, erect or ascending, grooved and branching in the upper part. Stems thin (not more than 2 mm in diameter). Stipules are lanceolate, with long slender, sharp-pointed tips. Leaves with long stalks, the lower up to 8 cm long, the upper shorter. Leaflets are small, 0,8 to 1,5 cm long, 0.4 to 1.0 cm wide, obovate, rounded or slightly indented at the tip, margins finely toothed. Heads are in the axils of leaves, with stalks usually shorter than the subtending leaves, round, becoming half-round when mature, 1,0-1,5 cm in diameter. Flowers borne on short stalks as long as the calyx, strongly deflexed after flowering. Calyx 3 to 4 mm long, bell-shaped, the teeth 1 to 2 times as long as the tube, sharp-pointed. Corolla 5 to 7 mm long, reddish, the standard elliptical-oblong, with angled tip, prominently lined lengthwise, longer than the wings and keel, wings with a long narrow portion below. Pods as long as the standard, oblong to linear, 3- to 4-seeded, constricted between the seeds, without hairs. Flowering period June to July. Self-pollinated, autogamous. 2n = 16.

Distribution.

The Caucasus, the southern coast of Azov Sea.

Ecology.

Fallow fields, roadsides, salty places.

Utilization and economic value.

Very valuable forage plant for salty places. Characterized by high adaptivity to poor soils, high yield and seed productivity, high nutritive value. Good palatability by animals.
