Taxonomic position.

Family Poaceae Barnh., genus Zizania L.

Synonyms.

Hydropyrum latifolium Griseb.

Morphology and biology.

Perennial plant 80-200 cm in height with thick hollow roots up to 50 cm in length and 10 (20) cm in depth. Stems in the inferior geniculum are easily rooting, upright, thick, with a spongy core. Vaginas of leaves are bare and smooth, poorly rough from above; lingula is 7-15 mm in length. The panicles 30-60 cm in length, compressed from above, sprawling below, their branches are rough because of covering them by aculeus. Pistillary spike is 15-20 mm in length, staminal spike is 8-15 mm in length. The inferior floral scales of staminal spikes - with 5 venues and with a direct arista (2-3 mm) in the length on a top. The arista of pistillary flowers is up to 25 mm in length. The top floral scales -with 3 venues. Anthers are 5-8 mm in length. Blossoms in July, fructifies in September. 2n=30.

Distribution.

The general distribution: the European part of Russia - introduced plant, Eastern Siberia, Japan, China, Central Asia. In the territory of former USSR: the European part (introduced plant); Eastern Siberia (Amur river basin) - Lower-Zeisky, Buryat, Ussuriysky and Amgunsky areas.

Ecology.

On coast of reservoirs.

Utilization and economic value.

Use and economic value. A forage plant of rather high advantage. Alimentary - caryopsis, yang shootsand the basis of leaves are edible.
