Object description Download GIS-layers

Authors:

Specialist-biologist - I.N. Nadtochii, GIS-specialist - I.A. Budrevskaya.

Date of creation:

5.12.2003.

Scale:

1:20 000 000.

Accuracy of map:

Created using information taken from open-published literature and maps of scale 1:10 000 000-1:80 000 000.

Projection:

"Alber`s Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area is shown by polygon (the main distribution) and by points (sporadic distribution). Zone of harmfulness is shown by polygon.

Accuracy of classifier:

Geographic distribution of the species is divided into two zones: zone of sporadic distribution, and zone where weed has economic impact. Area and zones were determined by an analysis of open-published cartographical materials and literature. Maps of Centaurea cyanus distribution were used from Chikova (1983), Hulten et al. (1986) and Volkova (1935) for drawing the area. The final area of distribution coincides with the map of Chikova (1983). Within the Caucasus, the distribution of the plant is confirmed for Ciscaucasa only (Galushko, 1980). Therefore the area drawn by Hulten et al (1986), in this region was rejected. Points of sporadic distribution were based on maps from both sources. The zone of harm is based on literature from Andreev & Lapkovskii (1995); Andreev et al. (1983); Gurskii (1956); Dmitriev (1937); Korovina (1981); Korovina (1982); Korovina (1983); Kolpikova (1967); Novoidarskii & Skryabina (1971); Tikhonova (1937) and correspondence to the map of arable lands.

Method of map production:

Published literature was reviewed, including Atlases, monographs and papers. Occurrence data were obtained from herbarium specimens, floras, monographs and papers. Data were then compiled through scanning and geo-referencing to develop a composite vector map. The biologist, together with the GIS specialist, drew a composite weed distribution area based on compiled data.
