Authors:

Object specialist N.N. Luneva,
GIS-specialist I.A. Budrevskaya

Date of creation:

9.12.2004.

Scale:

1:20 000 000.

Accuracy of map:

Map was created based on information taken from open-published literature and maps of scale 1: 5 000 000 to 1: 100 000 000.

Projection:

"Alber's Equal Area Conic for the USSR", 9, 1001, 7, 100, 0, 44, 68, 0, 0.

Basic contents:

Vector map. Area of species distribution is shown by polygons, and sporadic distribution by points. Zones of weediness are shown by polygons.

Accuracy of classifier:

The weed area is subdivided into two zones, one representing species distribution, and the second where weed is considered a serious pest. Points represent locations where sporadic occurrence has been reported. The zone of weediness was established according to criteria of occurrence (% of fields where this species is found) and abundance, where the occurrence of this species exceeded 50% and with its field abundance (projective cover) being more than 15% (Tanskii et al., 1998).

Method of map production:

Published literature was reviewed, including Atlases, monographs and papers. Occurrence data were obtained from herbarium specimens, floras, monographs and papers. A map of E. repens distribution in Russia taken from Volkov (1935) was used as a prototype. The area was adjusted according to the following literature data on the species distribution in Russia: Tsvelev (1976), Ul'yanova (1981, 1988), Nikitin (1983). The zone of main distribution in European Russia and adjacent CIS countries was adjusted according to the following sources: Geideman (1954), Shishkin (1955), Ramenskaya (1960), Tolmachev (1964), Blagoveshchenskii (1966), Minyaev (1970), Tikhomirov (1975), Klirosova & Noskova (1975), Fedorov (1981), Grin'ko et al. (1987), Andreev (1987), Tumans (1987), Vezik (1987), Kireeva (1989), Baranova et al. (1992), Malyshkin et al. (1990), Torikov et al. (1996), Orlova (1997), Bakin et al. (2000), Grigor'evskaya (2000), Rodionova (2000). The species distribution in the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia was also confirmed by the following sources: Galushko (1978), Grossgeim (1939), Magomedi (1982). The species distribution in the territory of Western and Middle Siberia was confirmed by the following sources: Malyshev & Peshkova (1979), Popov (1957), Koroleva (1973), Nesterova (1982), Fedotkin (1978), Milashchenko (1978), Terekhina (2000). The distribution in Kazakhstan and regions of Misddle Asia was determined based on the following source: Pavlov (1956), Nikitin & Gel'dikhanov (1988), Kalmakov & Tangiev (1967), Kornilova (1957). Distribution of E. repens in the Northern Caspian region was adjusted based on Vasil'chenko & Pidotti (1975), and its distribution in Eastern Siberia was based on Anonymous (1969), Malyshev & Peshkova (1979) and Buddo (1969). In the Far East the zone of main distribution was confirmed by the data of Tolmachev (1966), Voroshilov (1966) and Kharkevich (1985). The zone of weediness was defined based on Nikitin (1983) and was adjusted according to data on the weed occurrence and abundance taken from below references. Sporadic distribution areas were determined according to Shlyakova (1978), Kharkevich (1985) and herbarium data. Data were then compiled through scanning and geo-referencing to develop a composite vector map. The biologist, together with the GIS specialist, drew a composite weed distribution area based on compiled data.
