Taxonomical position.

Family Poaceae Benth., Genera Avena L.

Morphology and biology.

Annual cereal. Stalks bent, 60-90 cm in height. Leaves ciliated at the edges. Panicle about 30 cm in length. Spikelets have 3-5 florets. Spikelet scales 40-50 mm in length. The bottom floral scales at the bottom flower are 25-40 mm in length, with two short barbs on top and an awn in the back. Blossoms in May-June. Anemophilous. 2n=42 (28, 44).

Distribution.

Central Asia, Crimea, Abkhazia, the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, Iran, Afghanistan, and Northeastern Africa.

Ecology.

Occurs along roads, in settlements, and in fields.

Use and economic value.

Weed in crops of summer cultures.
