Taxonomic position.

Family Poaceae Barnh., genus Secale L.

Morphology and biology.

Annual plant 60-120 (200) cm in height. Stems are bare or downy under an inflorescence. Vaginas are bare and smooth. A plate of leaves are 5-10 mm in width, rough from above. Spikes are double-row, 5-15 cm in length, up to 12 mm in width, an axis of spike is not fragile, downy by short hairs. Spikes with 2-3 flowers. Spike.s scales are keeled, richly coated by aciculums along keel, aristaless or with short, up to 5 mm in length, an arista. Inferior flower scales are 4-15 mm in length, are downy by ciliums across keel, with an arista up to 6 cm in length on a top. Anthers are 5-12 mm in length. Carypsises are free, easy removing.
Blossoms in July, fructifies in September. 2n=30

Distribution.

The general diffusion: Europea, Asia. As the cultivated plant is raised in many countries, mainly, in northern hemisphere. In territory of the former USSR: all areas.

Ecology.

Along roads, on open places, weed in wheat field.

Use and economic value.

Alimentary (grain), partly - fodder.
